Privacy Policy
Effective September 15, 2026
The short version: your tax information is used to prepare and file your returns, and for nothing else. We never sell it, and we never use it for advertising.
1. What we collect
The documents you send us (tax forms, statements, photos of paper), the answers you give to our questions, your account email, and logs of activity on your file. Payments are handled by our payment processor; we do not store your card number.
2. Tax return information is special
Federal law (Internal Revenue Code section 7216) restricts what a tax preparer can do with your tax return information. We use and disclose it only to prepare and file your returns, as you direct, or as the law permits or requires. We never sell your information, and we never use it for advertising.
3. How we use it
To build your draft return, to tell you what is still missing, to let a licensed CPA review and file the return when you choose to file, and to support you. Software, including automated systems we operate, reads your documents to do this work.
4. Who sees it
The licensed CPA who reviews and files your return, and the service providers we use to run Cofiled (hosting, document processing, email, payments), each bound to use your information only to serve you. Beyond that, we disclose your information only when you tell us to or when the law requires it.
5. How we protect it
Your documents are encrypted in transit and at rest, and every action on your file is logged. No system is perfectly secure, but we treat your tax information with the care the law demands of a preparer.
6. How long we keep it
Returns we file, and the documents supporting them, are kept at least as long as tax law requires preparers to keep them. If you never file with us, you can ask us to delete your documents and drafts, and we will, except where the law requires us to keep something.
7. Your choices
You can ask for a copy of the documents you sent us, ask us to correct your account information, or ask us to delete unfiled work, any time, by emailing hello@cofiled.com.
8. Who Cofiled is for
Cofiled is for adults filing their own tax returns. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
9. Changes and contact
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will flag it on this page with a new effective date. Questions: hello@cofiled.com.
