Pricing pages that make you hunt for the number are telling you something. Here's ours, first paragraph: Cofiled costs $99, flat, when you file. Starting is free. That's the whole price list.
The number
One return, $99, federal and state together. The price is the price whether your year was a single W-2 or a W-2 plus rideshare plus a rental. A return that needs a Schedule C, a Schedule E, and a mileage worksheet costs the same as one that needs none of them, because your papers deciding what forms you need shouldn't decide what you pay.
When you actually pay
- 01Start free, no card. Send whatever papers you have and answer the short list of what's missing.
- 02Read the finished draft. The real forms, every line, your refund or balance in plain sight. This costs nothing.
- 03Decide. If you want it filed, you pay $99 once and a licensed CPA reviews and files it. If you walk away, you owe nothing.
How that compares
Fee surveys of tax preparers put a typical professionally prepared individual return in the $220 to $400 range, more once a Schedule C or a rental is involved, because most preparers price by the form or by the hour. Do-it-yourself software looks cheaper until the self-employment tier and the state return stack up near the same number, with you doing the work. We can hold one flat price because software does the hours a preparer bills for; the CPA's time goes where it matters, reviewing and signing.
Behind a few years?
Each tax year is its own return, filed on that year's forms. We handle 2019 through 2026, and you see the price for the whole catch-up before paying anything, so there's no meter running while you dig for old papers. What the catch-up actually involves is covered in our guide on what happens when you haven't filed in years, and the fuller picture of the service is in What is Cofiled.
The shortcut
Stop estimating and look at the real thing. Send what you have, read your finished draft free, and decide with the number in front of you. $99 flat if you file, a licensed CPA signs it.
